Through distinctive combinations of sounds, tones, rhythm, and timbre, music can evoke different emotions and satisfy different needs for listeners. For some artists, music can be used to tell a story. An album can be created as one collective piece broken off into several parts, or simply a collection of random songs that don’t necessarily tie together. In this article, I am going to analyze the album Malibu by Anderson .Paak, and its unique samples/sound as a form of storytelling.

While each song on the album is unique, they provide a similar sound that ties them all together. When listened to all together it appears to tell a story and transition smoothly. Throughout the album there are samples of interviews from surfers in the 90’s which provides a unique old-timey feel and provokes imagery of the ocean, adding to the mellow vibe of the album. Paak uses drums, snaps, claps, and beautiful back up vocals to create an iconic sound. The vocals are sultry and raspy providing a sexual feel with groovy melodies and simple instrumentals tying perfectly together. Each song varies in tempo, but generally paints a picture of Paak’s experiences growing up.

“This Season | Carry Me” begins with a muffled beat seemingly played from an old record player with subtle static and quickly the quality differs when Anderson .Paak adds his vocals. The contrast between the qualities overlayed with a simple beat creates a unique sound that allows the listener to focus on the story his lyrics presents of his past struggles. His voice is particularly raspy and powerful, dragging the words out longer than other songs on the album. In contrast, finishing off with “The Dreamer” has an upbeat catchy tempo and the lyrics provide a reflection, an alternate perspective of his past providing optimism and appreciation for what he did have growing up and what he was able to accomplish despite his shortcomings. While each song varies in tempo and influence, ranging from 60’s soul to 70’s groove and more, it is apparent that this album is deeply personal, revealing much of Paak’s struggle for stability and success. The lyrics are powerful and meaningful to the artist, along with catchy beats simple enough not to distract from the story but unique enough not to leave the consumer bored.

All in all, music is special in its ability to provoke emotion, tell a story and resonate with the listener. Anderson .Paak does an excellent job in “Malibu” of confidently expressing his story while simultaneously creating sounds with very distinct inspirations and a clear artistic vision. Albums like this create a deeper appreciation for music as expression as well as a platform for storytelling.
